Csânyi Teleki Villanyi Kékfrankos 2019 $27

Lifted, earthy aromatics, brick dust and blueberries, cocoa powder and hints of beefy gamey complexity follow and then saturate the palate. From Hungary, the tannins are fleshy, and smooth, and there’s an almost creamy, savoury character running through it. Kékfrankos is an Austro-Hungarian variety grown widely across the Carpathian Basin and is thought to have originated in Lower Styria, now part of Slovenia. It’s made Central and Eastern Europe its home since the Middle Ages but it’s better known by its other name, Blaufränkisch.
