Petane Station Late Harvest Edelzwicker 2020 $30 375ml
Taken from the German words ‘edel’ (noble) and ‘zwicker’ (blend), edelzwicker is an old Alsatian name for a blend of ‘noble’ or important grapes harvested from the same vineyard on the same day and made into a wine that truly reflects the season and the site. 2020 was, according to winemaker Philip Barber, the perfect harvest to create a lusciously decadent, late harvest style, because it had been so warm and dry the whole season. Comprised of 50% pinot gris, 35% chardonnay, 14% gewürztraminer and a sneaky squeak of 1% viognier left for 20 hours then pressed and co-fermented, it’s a luxuriously sweet (113.7g/l of residual sugar) style that’ll have the holes in your molars screaming, but your tastebuds singing because it’s so refreshing and lovely. Think candied mandarin, honeysuckle, poached pear and a hint of ginger and rosewater on the nose and palate – it’s a refreshingly zesty, but luxuriously sweet treat for the summer.
