Csányi Teleki Válogatás Villány Olaszrizling 2024
One of Hungary’s most popular wine grape varieties, Olaszrizling is responsible for producing loads of different styles, mostly on the light, zesty, citrus-forward spectrum. Known internationally as Welschriesling, and despite its name’s reference to Riesling, it’s not related to Riesling. I know. Confusing much? “Olasz” translates to “Italian” in Hungarian, and both Italian and Welsh were synonyms for something that was foreign or had a distant origin. This example from Teleki just scooped the trophy for Best Wine in Villány out of 33o entries. Processed in stainless steel tanks to preserve its crisp, citrus and floral intensity, this shiny, new vintage sings with white peach, lemon blossom, hints of nashi and crushed almond characters. It has a (dare I say it) Muller Thurgau note on the palate, which I really like.

Csányi Teleki Válogatás Villány Irsai Olivér 2024
Crafted from a grape called Irsai Olivér (a Hungarian white wine variety, bred from a cross between Pozsonyi and Pearl of Csaba in 1930), this wine by Csányi has a distinctive Muscat character and bursts with ripe apricot, fresh peach, mandarin and loads of red apple notes. It’s seriously summery and served super-chilled on a sunny day, it’d be a dangerously attractive style. Irsai is mostly planted in Hungary, although it appears in Moldova, Slovakia and Russia and thanks to a canny Martinborough importer, it’s now something we can enjoy in New Zealand. Floral, feisty, fruity AF.

Csányi Teleki Válogatás Villány Ünneplés Syrah Rosé 2024
Founded by Zsigmond Teleki in 1881, Csányi Winery is located on the outskirts of the town of Villány, and it’s a spot that grows super-spicy Syrah. Ünneplés means ‘celebration’ in Hungarian, and that’s what you’re getting in this rosé. Licked with creaming soda, ripe raspberry, spiced apple tea, watermelon and blackcurrant leaf top notes on the nose and palate. Generous and juicy and showing a deliciously dry finish.

Gere Tamás & Zsolt Villány Hárslevelű 2023
The Hárslevelű grape is one of Hungary’s classics, producing a deeply aromatic white wine, roaring with musky ginger characters, smoked peach, baking spices and preserved lemon and rockmelon notes. After crushing, the grape must is placed in a stainless steel tanks where the juice is soaked on skins for 36 hours before pressing, fermentation and an extended maturation on its lees before being aged in tank for another year. It’s a golden, fabulously floral style with creamy intensity to finish. Rich, ripe, and roaring with Stonefruit ahoy!
