Folding Hill Orchard Block Central Otago Pinot Noir 2021 $65
Named after the western boundary of the vineyard, which happens to be an orchard of cider apple trees and the most sheltered spot on the vineyard site. It’s a super-stylish example and more intensely aromatic and textural than the previous vintage. An extended 18-month maturation in French oak will have much to do with that, and the result is an exciting, energetically spicy wine scented with baked rhubarb, fresh redcurrant, dark cherry and smoky, black tea notes, all of which osmose across to the palate. Add a sprinkling of savoury, earthy notes of mushroom and forest floor, combined with seductive, succulent tannins, and you’ve got an impressive Pinot Noir that’ll age well into the 2030’s.
