Trinity Hill Thomson’s Block Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2020 $120
Soothing, stylish and stacked with dark berries, exotic spices, smoky notes and stitched together with graphite-dusted goodness. Grown on the steep slopes of Roys Hill, overlooking the Gimblett Gravels sub-region, this single vineyard syrah is fresh and finely tuned and the tannins have the perfect amount of gum-prickling goodness. Hand-picked (it’s impossible to get machines up there) whole bunches were gently footplunged in a traditional pigeage style into two small stainless steel, open-top fermenters which is were it was given a 19-day soak on skins before pressing and being moved to new French oak barrels to sleep quietly for 14 months. Bottled unfined and with very minimal filtration, it has incredible drive and power on the palate, while being silky and soothing to finish. Yes, it’s pricey, but it’s oh so nicey.
