Swift Wines Whole Bunch Bridge Pa Triangle Syrah 2019 $40 – re-taste 30 Oct 2022
I first tasted this wine back in October 2021 (see notes below)
2019 will always be known as belonging in the Holy Trinity of vintages (2019, 2020, 2021) and three years on, this syrah is really starting to knit together nicely. Grown in the Cardoness Vineyard in the iron-rich soils of the Bridge Pa Triangle district, it’s showing distinct savoury, leather and peppered berry notes on the nose and palate. The tannin chew and ‘cling’ from barrel fermentation and 23 days on skins are really beginning to express themselves and the acidity and spice layers are still very fresh.
Swift Wines Whole Bunch Bridge Pa Triangle Syrah 2019 $40
Syrah lends itself to reductive winemaking, especially when it’s made in a low-preservative way like Lauren Swift prefers. When her syrah is fresh out of the gate, it takes on a struck-match, flinty, smoky complexity that wraps around the pepper and blueberry backbone of the wine. She’s the winemaker for Ash Ridge; this is her side hustle, and my speed hustle was down to the roast shop so I could sip this with the yummy burnt bits from the leg of lamb. Drink now through 2027.
