Petane Wines It’s Only Hawke’s Bay Gamay Piquette 2022 $22 
Winemaker Philip Barber has had a crack at this ancient, yet newly trendy style by using gamay grape skins, rainwater, a few baskets of pinot gris and a decent 60lt splash of gamay juice which was re-fermented for 5 days in tank to close to dryness then bottled whilst retaining a hint of sparkle “a little prickle” according to Phil of fizz which only lasts for the first sip or two. It’s definitely some fresh, feisty, lightly-styled (4%alc) Summer sippage. Its cloudy strawberry colour comes from it being bottled unfined and unfiltered, and aromas speak to citrus, white strawberry, herbaceous notes.
As far as this style goes, it’s a clean, refreshing example.
