Bald Hills Kirameki Central Otago Pinot Gris 2021 $30
Every year the team at Bald Hills release a Kirameki – I get super excited, and it’s fast becoming one of my favourite Central Otago examples. Soothing to sip, yet it’s laced with energetic acidity and complex baking spice notes and the nashi and quince core is showing purity and concentration. It’s a vibrant, textural, generously dry style that’s incredibly food-friendly. Where’d the name come from? Good question. Kirameki is a Japanese word for ‘sparkle’, ‘glint’, ‘glitter’ or ‘glow’ and the good folk at Bald Hills felt it was a great way to describe the rocks that line the Northern tip pinot gris vineyard which sits high up in Gibbston Valley.
