Carrick The Magnetic Organic Central Otago Pinot Noir 2019 $65
‘The Magnetic’ was a floating gold dredge which operated in the Kawarau River back in the mid-1800s in the height of the regions’ gold rush period – it’s picture is on the back label. Crafted by winemaker Rosie Menzies, from a tiny block of Abel clone fruit (just a third of a hectare), it’s aged in oak for 10 months (15% new Mercurey barrels) and has powerful aromas of tamarillo, wild cherry and raspberries rubbed into old leather. On the palate it is fresh, youthful and spice-soaked, with a core of dark fruit and freshly turned earth and chewy tannins which elongate the finish and add complexity to the textures. Powerfully built and has huge potential for the cellar.
