Trinity Hill Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2020 $24

2020 is proving itself to be an absolute smasher of a vintage for Hawke’s Bay reds and this merlot, at $24, is, I think, one of the best value examples on the New Zealand market right now. Grown in the Gimblett Gravels, in Trinity Hill’s Tin Shed vineyard, and boasting a splash of 7% cabernet sauvignon, this wine is a smoky sensation. Rich, dense and yet hugely playful on the palate, it’s awash with dark berryfruits, dark cocoa, exotic spices and earthy, iron filings and leather on the finish. Complex and textural, it’s a warm, ribsticking red that’ll wow the crowds and soothe the wallet.

The bright intense purpleness of the Trinity Hill Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2020 ($24) is the perfect tease to a rich, plum and blueberry-boosted, cocoa-crammed wine that has warmth and a lovely woolly texture to cuddle this meaty, Autumnal soupy sensation. Trinityhill.com
