Penfolds Grange 2017 $850
This is the 70th anniversary of one of the most famous wines in the world, an Australian treasure and in the words of Peter Gago, its custodian, it’s an example of “sticks and stones filtration” rather than anything manufactured or synthesised. It’s also only the 7th Grange to be comprised of 100% shiraz. 86% Barossa and 14% McLaren Vale fruit parcels were sourced from a highly select posse of growers, it was matured for 18 months in large, American, Shenandoah oak hogsheads, which were 100% new. Supremely elegant, stylish and sophisticated, it’s incredibly approachable, and you’re not going to be met with a mosh pit in your mouth if you drink it too early. Quite the opposite, this 2017 vintage is lithe and lovely and truly special now, however by the time 2035 rolls around it’ll be roaring.
