Back in 2004, New York natives the Beastie Boys released their monster hip-hop album To the 5 Boroughs in praise of their city. Eleven years later, Kalex releases its first Five Boroughs pinot in homage to the five sub-regions of Central Otago they source fruit from. Connection? Owner Alex Kaufman is a New Yorker, and Mike D (Michael Diamond) from the Beasties is a wine collector and sommelier. This new 2019 vintage has taut tannins, rosehip, tamarillo and good length of flavour. It also boasts notes of juicy cherry, and black tea which make this a lovely drop, especially with beef tacos.
