The Landing Bay of Islands Syrah 2019 $48
Well if you’re not seduced by the style, texture and grooviness of the label of this bottle for starters, then the elegant red fruits, soft pepper and stylish spice layers in this syrah will totally turn you sideways. Red cherry, soft blueberry and white pepper characters wash across the tongue, the tannins are elastic and soothing, theres’ a savoury edge and I love how subtle and restrained this style is. One might assume syrah from Northland will be super-ripe and ott – but this example is a cool cucumber. Made by Rod McIvor, the most famous syrahnian (new word) in all of Northland, this wine has the makings of a future classic. Originally crafted for guests of The Landing’s luxury lodge properties on the Purerua Peninsula, it’s now yours to enjoy. While it tastes like it’s been in the bottle for a good few years, it’s also fresh, frisky, and fanging with flavour.
