Helen and Ian Dent might be the newest winemakers in the Waitaki Valley, but they’re crafting their riesling from the oldest vines in the region. Ian’s a machine operator at the local power station and Helen is an expert I.T number cruncher, and with rockstar riesling maker Grant Taylor at the helm, their debut release exhibits the expected attention to detail. It is bone dry and soaked in lashings of lime, green apple and masses of mandarin magic on the mid-palate. The vineyard itself is tucked beneath Mt Domett and the Saint Mary’s range, and it’s deep, limestone soils are responsible for the electric, clean-as-a-whistle minerality and texture. Gorgeous!
