Pegasus Bay Prima Donna Waipara Pinot Noir 2016 $100
Mat Donaldson only makes a Prima Donna when the fruit is absolutely exceptional, which is good from a ‘guarantee of quality’ perspective, but it really gets up the goats of those wine aficionados with OCD who want nice, consistent vintage dates in their cellar collections. The first sniff will send you into a snuggle sack of truffle, spice, chocolate-dipped berries and cherries. The palate has depth and density and solid fruit saturation which accentuates the bright, vibrant acidity and soft, prickly tannins. I love the plushness and plumpness and its superb length of flavour. It’ll cellar nicely to 2030 methinks.
