Steve Meyer is the Chief Winemaker responsible for the I Am George wines (released in New Zealand in 2018), a red wine brand created in tribute to the legacy of George Wyndham, one of the pioneers of Australian wine. The story has it Wyndham arrived in Sydney from the U.K. in 1827 to purchase some 2,000-plus acres of land near the Hunter River. He planted vines in 1830 and began a famous dynasty of winegrowing which eventuated in what we know as Wyndham Estate. Meyer’s new addition to the range brings in cabernet sauvignon fruit from the Limestone Coast, an area known for injecting intense freshness and herbaceousness into its cabernet and this is no exception. Lifted bay leaf, tobacco leaf, sandalwood and cedar scents merge with black fruits and smoky tones on the nose and palate, deep spicy layers and elastic tannins that lengthen the flavour. Solid, easy drinking cabernet that’s widely available.
