Little Wing Waiheke Island Syrah 2016

Little Wing Waiheke Island Syrah 2016 $60 This is Gillian and Gareth MacLachlan’s red riot. They became obsessed with Syrah after working in the Northern Rhone in 2010, so when the opportunity came along to purchase a semi-abandoned oceanfront vineyard on Waiheke Island years later, of course syrah was compulsory!  Planted on heavy clays, super-close […]

Mudbrick Reserve Waiheke Island Syrah 2018

Mudbrick Reserve Waiheke Island Syrah 2018 $75  I honestly couldn’t tell you the last time I tasted a syrah that was so young yet sang so beautifully on the palate.  Winemaker Patrick Newton has woven some witchcraft with what’s quite clearly plump, flavour-stacked fruit, to produce an ultra-velvety syrah, stitched together with cracked pepper, boysenberries, […]

Obsidian Waiheke Island Vitreous 2015

Obsidian Waiheke Island Vitreous 2015 $31.50 A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec, this is how classic Bordeaux-style reds are composed.  Aromatically this wine is mindblowingly elegant and hearty at the same time.  I love the lithe, slippery texture, peppery mid-palate and marathon-like length of flavour. Gorgeous.

Obsidian Reserve Waiheke Island Chardonnay 2017 $48 (5 stars)

The stylish, chablis-like elegance of this wine made it an absolute showstopper for me.  I love the purity of fruit, intense citrus and minerality on the mid-palate, its peachy backbone and the dusting of subtle nutty notes on the finish.  It’s a beautifully balanced example that will leave you shaking your head in a state […]

Dunleavy The Grafter Waiheke Island Syrah 2014 $45.90 (4.5 stars)

Brothers Paul, John and Mike Dunleavy are at the helm of the company alongside their father Terry Dunleavy MBE – this family have championed island syrah since the get-go. If there was a ‘Waiheke’s Got Talent’ contest, I’d DEFINITELY text in my vote for syrah. Aged for 12 months in smoky French oak, this syrah […]
