Torlesse Waipara Riesling 2016

Torlesse Waipara Riesling 2016 $20 I was really hoping for better with this riesling, having had some lovely experiences with previous vintages.  However there’s something slightly soapy and flat on the nose of the 2016, and on the palate it lacks freshness and a sense of clean fruit.  It’s unfortunately a little murky on the […]

Greywacke Late Harvest Marlborough Riesling 2011

Greywacke Late Harvest Marlborough Riesling 2011 $38 Holy toffee apples, Batman!  Carefully crafted by the legendary Kevin Judd, this little bottle of liquid indulgence has all the wicked sweetness of a sneaky dollar lolly mixture stashed under your pillow to nibble on when your mum’s not looking.  Hints of beeswax and spice on the nose […]

The Writer’s Block Waitaki Valley Riesling 2018

The Writer’s Block Waitaki Valley Riesling 2018 $29 Produced by Brendan Seal at his Urbn Winery in central Dunedin from fruit sourced from stunning vineyards in the Waitaki Valley in North Otago.  The climate there is so extreme that grapes struggle along, pouring all their energy into tiny, flavour-packed nuggets of niceness.  The result is a […]

Tinpot Hut Marlborough Late Harvest Riesling 2017

Tinpot Hut Marlborough Late Harvest Riesling 2017 $28  Winemaker Fiona Turner has worked her magic on this stylishly sticky, sweet wine that carries candied citrus, toffee apple and heavenly honey notes on the nose and palate.  Fresh and flirtatious, it’s seriously sweet, yet finely tuned and beautifully balanced.  Great stuff!

Neudorf Moutere Riesling Dry 2017

Neudorf Moutere Riesling Dry 2017 ($29) Crafted from a concoction of three different clones harvested in cooler conditions than usual in the Moutere.  It has fullness and funk from its 100% wild ferment, alongside soft lime and bruised apple aromatics, a hint of biscuity, nutty niceness and long, elegant acidity on the finish.  It’s fantastic.

Anchorage Nelson Riesling 2015

Anchorage Nelson Riesling 2015 $18 This wine is definitely on the dry side.  In fact it’s so dry it’s practically skeletal if you like that sort of thing.  I like the lime intensity on the nose, however the palate is just too mean and skinny for me personally.  If you prefer your rieslings to exfoliate […]

Kalex Bendigo Terrace Central Otago Riesling 2014 $32 ★★★★½

Wow! Lime alert! This southern star smashes through the palate with green apple and quartz-powder, minerally mouthfeel that lingers long and will send your saliva glands into overload.  Dry and bony, but packed with character – here’s a wine that’ll work

Cliffhanger Mosel Riesling 2015 $24 (4 stars)

Now why would you make it easy on yourself by planting your vineyard on nice, even, flat land, when you can pop your plants on rough, rocky cliffs overlooking the banks of the Mosel River.  But it’s these extremes creating the eruption of green apple intensity, honeysuckle, lime and lipsmacking, tropical acidity.  This German riesling […]

Mon Cheval Waipara Valley Riesling 2014 $25 4 stars

Whoever said owning racehorses was a great way to lose money, clearly weren’t fortunate enough to own ‘Under Cover Lover’, the champion racehorse who made her owners enough cash to start their dream of developing their dream of creating a tiny vineyard in Waipara’s Weka Pass.  Tiny amounts of riesling are grown and this vintage, […]
