Beach House ‘F’ Hawke’s Bay Cabernet Franc 2018 $25

Here’s a fact. If it weren’t for cabernet franc, we wouldn’t have any cabernet sauvignon. You see, back in the mists of time, cabernet franc had some sexy-time with a saucy little sauvignon blanc vine and when the sap began to rise in the springtime, a moody, broody, baby cabernet sauvignon was born. Chris Harrison has a love for cabernet franc and is one of the few growers in the country to bottle it solo, rather than blending it with others. I love its earthy aromatics and its blueberry, cherry and seasoned leather layers. The tannins are soft and suede-like, the acidity is fresh, and the finish long and savoury. It’s a complex, stylish wine.
