Parrot Dog Avocado Gose 440ml can $8.99

Reviewed for dish magazine July/Aug 2020 and paired with Spinach, feta, olive and currant pie

This vegetarian pie just hollers out for the new Parrot Dog Avocado Gose 440ml ($8.99) because it boasts the classic tart, citrus and salty characters of a traditional gose, with the creamy-smooth texture of fresh avocados from The Avo Tree.  Spice and coriander seed were also added to make it rock with the olives and currant characters. “Our brew team took The Avo Tree’s avocados, split, scooped and mashed them up with lime juice and then added the avocado mash to the beer after fermentation. Spice and coriander seed were earlier added to the wort, just after the boil and before fermentation, to bring the classic Gose notes,” says Lucy Aitchison from Parrotdog who describes the brewing technique for the Avocado Gose is similar to dry hopping.  It’s a New Zealand first, combining avocados and beer, a collab which kicked in when the Avo Tree owner (and long-time avocado-beer dreamer) Thorley Robbins decided to contact loyal customers Parrotdog to propose ‘foaming’ a joint brew.  “Nice” the Parrot Dogs said.
