Edelzwicker wine is essentially made from white grapes which are harvested and fermented together. It’s all a bit loose and there are no set rules with what grapes can be used and those grapes can also be made into wine separately and then blended together. Historically, it’s a wine made from different varieties grown together in a single vineyard. Zwicker is directly translated as “blend,” Edel means “noble” and I suspect this particular blend has gewürztraminer and riesling. Extra time on skins has imparted the pretty, apricot colour and given it an element of ‘skinsy’ astringency and dryness on the finish. It’s a multi-layered, complex, earthy-toned style.
