Pegasus Bay Virtuoso Waipara Chardonnay 2016 $60

I don’t know what Mat Donaldson and the team at Pegasus Bay did in their past lives, but clearly they were lovely to puppies, helped lots of elderly people across the street, paid their taxes and put teaspoons of sugar water out for tired bumblebees to drink, because the summer of 2016 shined the light of angels upon their chardonnay.  Golden and gorgeous in the glass, it erupts with roast stonefruit, caramelised oak, grapefruit pith and fresh, frisky minerality.  There’s also a lovely, almond and dried herb layer on the finish, the acidity is beautifully balanced and adds focus, brightness and purity to the long, rich finish.  Chardonnay lovers – you need this.
