Kawa Grove Wines Muriwai Chambourcin Saperavi 2018 $50

If you were looking for two of the rarest red wine varieties in the southern hemisphere then you’ve come to the correct cul de sac.  Organically grown chambourcin (a french-american hybrid grape whose juice is pink or red, as opposed to other grapes where the juice is clear) and Saperavi (one of 500+ varieties native to Georgia, but it’s snuck quietly into New Zealand and is making itself a happy home at Muriwai, West Auckland) this Don Batley-produced wine is wild, untamed and worth every cent.   Showing intense blackcurrant, beetroot and freshly turned earth flavours, alongside crazy juniper and peppery deliciousness, it’s a muscular, sinewy sip that’s built more along the lines of a marathon runner than a sprint. Unfined, unfiltered, and produced with no added sulphites, stabilisers, animal products or any other ‘nasties’, it’s a funky, slightly spritzig style that’ll appeal to those wild at heart and funky by nature.
