I’m only a recent convert to Black Peak, having kicked myself constantly over recent weeks for not having known about James McElrea’s talents til now. After years of working across various Central Otago sub-regions he’s gone out on his own, nurturing a schist, gravel and mineral-quartz rich site, in little known Queensbury district above the Clutha river. Ultra-tangy lime, honeysuckle and apple aromas head a palate erupting with citrus, sorbet intensity and it’s incredible with mandarin, apple and cashew salad.
