Schild Estate Barossa Shiraz 2022 $24.99

If you don’t want to feel ancient, never use the phrase ‘burn CDs’ in front of anyone under 25. The baffled, slightly pitying look they’ll give you will crush your soul. Happily, you can turn to this bright-as-a-button wine to cheer yourself up. Ultra-attractive, it bursts with blackcurrant, fruitcake spices and bright plum. However, I don’t believe I’ve ever tasted a ‘blood plum’, which is what this wine is described as tasting like on the back label. So instead I’ll focus on the layers of liquorice, pepper, bay leaf, cherry, cocoa, and cough drop complexity. It’s a beautifully styled, nicely balanced shiraz boasting a whiff of oiled leather on the finish. From the makers of the iconic Moorooroo Shiraz, crafted from a small patch of 170-year-old vinesm please don’t expect a sweet Shiraz, because this is the opposite. Get out the good goblets, and serve this with sneaky chunks of super-dark chocolate.
