Carrick The Magnetic Organic Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2022 $80

Crafted entirely from the Abel clone, the most famous and notoriously mysterious Pinot Noir clone in the country. Rumoured to come from a cutting smuggled into the country from the most famous Burgundian estate in the world, and subsequently confiscated by one Malcolm Abel, a NZ Customs Officer moonlighting as a winemaker. He saw the potential in the cutting and decided to propagate the clone. Carrick has a small, .34ha plot of the ‘Abel’ clone in the ground and once bottled, it was named after a famous Kawarau River gold dredge that always delivered the good stuff. This 2022 vintage is deliciously earthy, with notes of roast rhubarb, wild cherry, dried thyme, tar and charcoal on the nose and shows robustly spicy, anise and exotic layers on the palate. Elegantly styled, softly savoury and designed for the long haul in the cellar. Just 155 cases were produced.
