Dopff & Irion Cuvée René Dopff Alsace Riesling 2014 $22 (4.5 stars)

Here’s a definite new favourite for me, because I adore this style of riesling that’s packed with pure lime and green apple on the nose, crushed shells and wet stones.  It’s a dry style, yet has some gloriously crunchy, natural sweetness allowing a round, citrus-focused mid-palate and a generously cleansing finish.  Love it!

Saint Clair Pioneer Block 17 Plateau Gimblett Gravels Cabernet Merlot 2015 $37.90 (4.5 stars)

I love the lift of pepper, plum, cocoa and buckets of fruit cake spices this wine possesses.  It’s beautifully balanced with smooth, cuddly undertones and elegant, finely-grained tannins. Fleshy, succulent and seriously good. Clearly the team at Saint Clair in Marlborough are now experts in dealing with smoulderingly good fruit from Hawke’s Bay’s Gimblett Gravels […]

Hunter’s Marlborough Riesling 2016 $18.90 (4.5 stars)

If you’re looking for a bouncy, vivacious riesling that zings with flavour, you’ve come to the right spot because this new release from Hunter’s is so incredibly clean, fresh and limey.  With its snappy citrus and crushed shell notes, crunchy green apple and hints of honeysuckle, it’ll make any recipe featuring ginger, chilli, garlic and […]

Sacred Hill Halo Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2014 $25 ★★★★½

Born in the now nationally-reverred Rifleman’s Vineyard which lies in a secret spot inland-west of Napier in Puketapu’s Dartmoor Valley, this is an ‘impress-your-friends’ chardonnay if ever I tasted one.  Prepare for a burst of fennel, peach and vanilla, alongside some white pepper and a big, juicy, satisfying texture.  It’s fat, fresh and fabulous.

Tiki Single Vineyard Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2014 $23 ★★★★½

Crafted by winemaking legend Evan Ward, this wine oozes smoked apricot, toasty nectarine and oatmealy, creamy flavours.  There’s a gently juicy texture, silky citrus and vanilla-infused spices wash around the back teeth.  And it’s rich, fulfilling and rather fabulous. This is a great wine from a chardonnay master at work. Coopers Creek Bell Ringer Gisborne Albarino 2015 $22 ★★★★½

Winemaker Simon Nunns has crafted a distinctly limey, lipsmackingly dry and intensely mineral-driven albariño from Gisborne’s Bell vineyard.  It’s got real presence and poise and truckloads of tangy stonefruit notes, yet it’s beautifully balanced and delicate at the same time.  Sensational with pan seared groper steaks drizzled with lemon.

Bodegas Gancedo Capricho Val de Paxarinas Godello 2014 $29 ★★★★½

Godello (pronounced God-Ay-Yo) means “small indulgence”, and I for one am totally treating myself to more than one bottle of this.  Blended with a touch of Dona Blanca grapes, I love the aromas of apricot stone, lemon pith, crushed oyster shells and white peach.  Sourced from the region of Bierzo in Northwest Spain, the bursts […]

Cambridge Road Martinborough Papillon Rosé 2015 $25 ★★★★½

Crafted from a blend of 52% pinot gris, 36% pinot noir and 12% chardonnay, this fast became a new favourite of mine. With just 2500 bottles being made, you’ll need to be in quick because winemaker Lance Redgwell and his wife Bridie are on to a total winner here.  Produced using organic and biodynamic techniques, […]

Staete Landt Annabel Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2013 $22 ★★★★½

This is absolutely my kind of sauvignon, something that pushes the envelope just a smidge, away from the capsicum and cats pee and into a spectrum of lemongrass, basil, marzipan and intense white peach and pepper characters.  Winemaker Ruud Maasdam has created a wine with real tension and tautness – and having a couple of […]

Ca’ Di Rajo Marino 2010 $46 ★★★★½

Italian cabernet sauvignon can be intensely fruity and this example from Ca’ di Rajo, grown on the banks of the river Piave is exactly that.  I love the dark plum and boysenberry characters which merge with tobacco leaf, vanilla, pepper and violets.  Nicely structured tannins elongate the savoury flavours and combine to create a stunning […]
