Music Bay Marlborough Pinot Gris 2017 $16

Music Bay Marlborough Pinot Gris 2017 $16  Here’s a crispy, crunchy little quaffer which shows all the hallmarks of good gris, ie. pear, apple, quince and some spice.  It’s not a complicated wine, simple and sippable.

Snapper Rock Hawke’s Bay Merlot Cabernet 2016 $16.99

Snapper Rock Hawke’s Bay Merlot Cabernet 2016 $16.99 Sweetly fruited on the nose, this is, like its namesake, a snappy little red blend that’s a great value quaffer.  Smooth, velvety and showing plum, cherry and redcurrant characters on  the finish.  Simple, yummy and dangerously drinkable.   trade $11.08

Ash Ridge Hawke’s Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Ash Ridge Hawke’s Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2017 $21 Lemon, lime notes on the nose and palate, they’re edged with seashell minerality and expect some marzipan and toasty notes from the 85% barrel fermentation as well. It could do with more generosity and freshness in the mid palate however. www.ashridgewines.co.nz

Melton Estate Canterbury Pinot Gris

Melton Estate Canterbury Pinot Gris 2015 $20  Located in the leafy climes of West Melton, 20 mins or so drive west of Christchurch city, this pinot gris has a hint of botrytis character happening, honeyed notes, beeswax and some roast stonefruit showing through.  Doesn’t really show the classic nashi, pear, quince and apple characters that […]

Most Wanted South Australia Shiraz 2017 $11.99

Most Wanted South Australia Shiraz 2017 $11.99 If you’re looking for an uncomplicated, easy-to-quaff, blackcurrant and plum-fest then turn off the torch and grab a bottle of this to please the crowds.  Simple berry and cherry flavours merge with a hint of liquorice and fruitcake spices to bring an easy-peasy, don’t-even-think-about-it sip. www.blackmarket.co.nz

Tahbilk One Million Cuttings South Australian Chardonnay 2016 $18 (3 stars)

This is a new brand to hit our shores from one of Australia’s iconic brands. If you’re looking for a tangy, lemony, grapefruity chardonnay with creamy, nutty and soft melon and guava flavours, then this will fit. It’s a touch broad, but fruity enough to give you a tropical kick for everyday quaffing. www.wineandmore.co.nz

French Peak Canterbury Pinot Gris 2017

French Peak Canterbury Pinot Gris 2017 $30 Golden in the glass and powdery complexity and quincey characters, fresh apple and intensely dry.  Edged with white pepper and minerally, licking wet stones texture to it.  Bracing and bouncy, but seriously dry – so it’ll appeal to those who like wines that rip across the gums and […]

Escarpment ‘Noir’ Martinborough Pinot Noir 2017 $30 (3 stars)

This is Larry McKenna’s (or Larry McPinot as he’s affectionately known) first foray into organic, minimal intervention, ‘natural’ winemaking and its, it’s ok. Unfined, unfiltered and minus any additions like sulphur (to prevent premature oxidation), this wine was fermented in a clay amphorae and left on its skins for around 9 months before being pressed […]

Little Angel Marlborough Pinot Gris 2017 $20.00 (3 stars)

I love this pinot gris because its so subtle and gentle and crisp and showing lovely pear and baked apple and hints of toasty, creamy spices. Crafted by the good folk at boutique Bladen wines, it’s a really crowd-pleasing style. www.bladen.co.nz

Bodega Tamari Mendoza Pinot Grigio 2016 $13.99

Here’s a lean, minerally pinot grigio with a hint of salinity, dried pear and nashi notes.  There’s a creaminess on the finish which mellows out some of the heat of the alcohol and allows some fruit notes to sneak through.  Good value grigio.  www.glengarrywines.co.nz
