Sileni Estates Sparkling Cuvée Pinot Gris NV $19 (2.5 stars)

I know packaging shouldn’t matter, but I really loathe those plastic ‘zork’ corks. The colour blue works on very few bottles and my eyes ache trying to digest more than 2 fonts on a label – but if you go beyond all the ‘busyness’ there’s actually an OK wine inside. Aromas of caramel apple brioche […]

Nikau Point Select Hawke’s Bay Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Nikau Point Select Hawke’s Bay Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 $13.99 ★★½ The Nikau Point brand has recently been given a spruce up, meaning it looks a tad more stylish on the table, which is always a good thing with a sub-$15 bottle.  This is a lightweight red that has layers of dried herb, berry and spice […]

Old North Road Pinot Noir 2013

Old North Road Pinot Noir 2013 $8.99 ★★½ It’s a local brand, from out West Auckland way, but the label doesn’t say where exactly in NZ the fruit has come from, so it’s anyone’s guess.   On first sniff there are some baked berry aromas edged with leafy, herbal notes and a whiff of something spicy.  […]

Whitecliff Pinot Noir 2014

Whitecliff Pinot Noir 2014 $8.99 ★★½ A local supermarket budget brand that’s been around for aeons, the Whitecliff pinot is actually an Australian wine.  But that’s ok because let’s face it, you’re seriously up against it to make pinot noir in this country for that sort of price.  It has some sweet, spicy notes on […]

Yealands Full Circle Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2008

Yealands Full Circle Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2008 $17  “What goes around comes around” states the label on this plastic bottle.  Produced by carbon-zero certified Yealands Estate this 100% recyclable is highly fruity on the nose and in the mouth it’s harmless, easy to drink but just a smidge boring if I’m being totally honest.  www.yealands.com

Babich Headwaters Organic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2010

Babich ‘Headwaters’ Organic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2010 $25  Aromatically it’s definitely on the herbaceous, slightly vegetal end of the spectrum and in the mouth it has a sharp, gooseberry and greengage flavour, however it’s a little disjointed on the finish.
