San Pedro Gato Negro Valle Central Carmenere 2017 $14.99

Wow!  How bright and pretty does this wine look in the glass?  Glossy, crimson craziness is what greets you when you pour it, then you’re hit with aromas of bay leaf, thyme, violets and cherry-choc notes.  A whoomph (technical term there) of spice, cocoa and a warming texture leads to a long, smile-inducing finish.  A great […]

San Pedro Gato Negro Valle Central Merlot 2016 $16.99

Very floral and leafy, bay and thyme on the nose alongside pepper and smoky, molasses and liquorice-like characters on the nose and palate.  Warming and good as a winter crowd pleaser.  www.glengarrywines.co.nz

San Pedro Gato Negro Valle Central Chardonnay 2014 $12.99

This chardonnay is tasting a tad tired and is rather dry and mean-spirited in the glass.  Lacking fruit or charm of any description, it has an odd, butyric acid edge to it (which is a polite way of saying it smells a bit like baby vom).  Avoid. www.glengarrywines.co.nz

Estampa Chile Cabernet Sauvignon/ Petit Verdot 2013 $20.00

The Colchagua Valley in Chile is where some of the biggest boldest reds hail from, yet this blend is gently juicy, spicy and plush and incredibly ripe and velvety to drink. There’s a warm, chocolatey, almost coconutty character on the finish (which is a hint they’ve used American oak) and the tannins are fine and […]

Baron Philippe De Rothschild Mapu Merlot 2015 $20.50 (3.5 stars)

This is a moreish little merlot from Rothschild’s Chilean wine operation that hits the quaffable spot. Savoury, roasting pan juices, pepper and baked plum and berry flavours combine with grippy, dusty tannins and a lengthy, leathery finish. Nice and meaty – classic South American characters here. www.kahurangiwine.com

Matetic Corralillo Chardonnay 2013 $25

Sourced from the region of Rosario in Chiles San Antonio Valley this chardonnay grows in decomposed granite soils studded with quartz and volcanic material; which probably explains the vein of minerality stitching the stonefruit, yellow plum and slivers of grapefruit together.  Pronounced ‘matt – eh – cheech’, it’s nutty, slightly creamy on the finish, and […]
