Mister Hawke’s Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2017 $18 (3.5 stars)

Looking for a little bit of lipsmacking lime and lemongrass in a glass? Well you’ve come to the right place. Hawke’s Bay sauvignon blanc has all that classic tropical, peach and passionfruit character that you know and love, but this Rod McDonald creation also delivers extra generosity and citrus concentration on the finish. It’s snappy-fresh […]

Momo Marlborough Chardonnay 2017 $19 (4 stars)

If you’re of an organic persuasion, then this wine will tick all your boxes. Lifted peach, grapefruit sit alongside buttered crumpet and nutty notes to create a multi-layered, super-tasty, juicy wine that should definitely be in your fridge! www.seresin.co.nz

Gladstone Vineyard Wairarapa Sauvignon Blanc 2017 $19 (3.5 stars)

Lemongrass alert! This organically grown sauvignon absolutely heaves with citrus blossom and herbaceousness, buckets of preserved lemon, passionfruit and showing a dry, zesty, mineral-heavy mid-palate. It’s not a fruit bomb, it’s an elegant, lean, complex style. www.gladstonevineyard.co.nz

Toño Mas O Menos 2015 $17.95 (3.5 stars)

Crafted by local lad Antony Mackenzie, Toño (Ton Yo) are a new twist on Spanish wines being grown in sunny Hawke’s Bay and it’s also the nickname of ‘Antonio’ in the Spanish language. This blend includes 55% Syrah, 30% Tempranillo, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. ‘Mas o Menos’ means ‘More or Less’ which is the case as […]

Hãhã Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2017 $17.99 (3.5 stars)

Brand spanky and bursting with berries, this merlot is lighter in style than the previous vintage, but has a silky, spice-driven backbone and a warming, cuddly, savoury sippability. It’s a soft, supple, crowd pleaser of a wine with buckets of berries to put smile on everyone’s’ face. Available in supermarkets everywhere.

Peter Lehmann The Barossan Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016 $19.99

Glossy and inky in the glass, this shiraz delivers a sweet, plummy, roundhouse kick to your cakehole. Hints of toasted coconut merge with a smorgasbord of spices, buckets of berries and luxurious layers of cocoa-dusted character on the finish. Sip with: Classic lamb moussaka. www.vinofino.co.nz

Hãhã Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2017 $17.99 (4 stars)

First things first. The fact that this wine sells for under $20 is baffling to me. It roars with stonefruit and citrus and has just the right amount of roasty toasty, hazelnutty flavours to kick it into ‘must-sip’ territory. Ripe, tropical, round and rumpty – just the way I like my chardonnay. Yum. www.hahawine.co.nz

Mount Brown Barrique Ferment Waipara Sauvignon Blanc 2016 $19 (3.5 stars)

Here’s a sauvignon blanc for chardonnay fans. Roasty, toasty and tropically taut and crisp, it’s bursting with smoked passionfruit punchiness and a lick of lemongrass on the finish. A very drinkable, in fact dangerously drinkable example. www.mountbrown.co.nz

Mount Brown Waipara Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2016 $16 (3.5 stars)

There’s something about the North Canterbury soils and the drying, Nor’west winds that create incredibly floral, super-concentrated sauvignon blanc. Lime, lemongrass, elderflower and bruised basil combine with passionfruit and tropical tones, cut grass and sweet pea combine with crunchy acidity to make a zesty, sexy sip indeed. www.mountbrown.co.nz

Thomas Goss McLaren Vale Shiraz 2016 $18.99

Boasting more bling on its grill than Lil Wayne or Lil Bow Wow, or in fact any of the “Lil’s”, this shiraz has clearly shown it’s at the top of its game as far as wine competitions are concerned.  Inky dark, glossy in the glass and bursting with boysenberry and blackcurrant characters on the nose […]
