Hunter’s Unoaked Marlborough Chardonnay 2016 $18.99 (4 stars)

It’s funny how if you put the word “un” in front of something, then people assume it’s going to be lacking. However this heavenly little peachy creature from Hunters hits all the right spots. Juicy nectarine and grapefruity goodness, loaded with lemon and packed with pineapple-powered punch. Great weight and refreshing texture means it’s darn […]

Astrolabe Farm Marlborough Riesling 2016 ($23) 4 stars

This wine smells just like you’ve walked into an orchard growing lemons on one side and apples on the other. So intense yet so delicate and the palate reflects exactly that. But I’d expect nothing less however from Simon Waghorn, winemaker extraordinaire and all-round riesling rockstar. Crafted from his home farm vineyard in Marlborough’s Grovetown […]

Black Estate Damsteep North Canterbury Riesling 2016 ($27) 4.5 stars

This is a really unusual, spicy, punchy riesling from their clay and limestone-laden Damsteep vineyard located at the foot of the Omihi Saddle. Grown biodynamically and 2 years into their organic certification, these 17 year-old vines are really hitting their straps. Matured in 3-10yr old barrels, followed by malolactic fermentation gives gorgeous, creamy complexity to […]

Ted by Mount Edward Central Otago Pinot Blanc 2016 $24.99

Pinot blanc is such a rare thing in this country, but Duncan Forsyth and Anna Riederer are experts at crafting some of the best year after year. It’s a complex little number, with summer wild flowers, white peach, walnut flesh and soft, exotic spices alongside a squeak of honeysuckle which adds a frill to the […]

Opawa Marlborough Pinot Noir 2016 $27 (4 stars)

This wine has those glorious, mysterious hedgerow and forest-floor type flavours that send me into a little swoon and yet, the wallet remains calm and happy. Opawa means ‘smoky river’ in Maori, and the vineyard is located in what was the riverbed of the old Opawa River. It’s crafted by Brett Birmingham and the talented […]

Homer Marlborough Pinot Noir 2016 $21.50 (3.5 stars)

Ultra-savoury, almost marmitey and meaty, this certified organic marlborough pinot noir has been shepherded into the bottle by winemaker Rebecca Salmond. Strong, muscular tannins give cheek-suckingly complex texture and add oomph to the shedload of spices already present. There’s a lot going on in this wine so make sure you’ve got some serious protein handy […]

Montana Winemakers Reserve Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2016 $16.99 (3.5 stars)

Sick of sauvignon that’s all sweet passionfruit, armpit sweat and OTT with the capsicum and cats pee? Fret no longer, this puppy has a lift of white peach, lemongrass, basil and limey loveliness alongside a vein of quartzy minerality in the mouth. It’s lean, clean, tidy and darn tasty. Available in supermarkets.

Stonecroft Gimblett Gravels Old Vine Chardonnay 2016 $47

If you’ve been seeking creamy satisfaction in all the wrong places, then fret no more. 100% malolactic fermentation has added lovely layers of crème caramel and ground almonds to classic citrus and grapefruity, peachy goodness to this fully-certified organic chardonnay. Crafted from fruit grown on vines planted in 1992, Mendoza clone vines with low yields, […]

Pretty Paddock Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2016 $10.99 (3 stars)

Classic punchy passionfruit, crushed herbs, green capsicum and pea pod flavours are all crammed into this bottle alongside gum-numbing acidity and long, prickly-fresh length of flavour. A squeak of white pepper and a lick of lemongrass makes this a good little ‘after work’ quaffer. www.vineonline

Framingham Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2016 $21 (4 stars)

Tangy and seriously grassy, this sauvignon has buckets of basil, tomato leaf and capsicum characters all bouncing out of the glass. Herbaceous and heaving with tangy, lemongrass and lime layers. It’s less sweet and more along the zesty, white fruits spectrum than a lot of Marlborough sauvignon out there. I really like it. www.framingham.co.nz
