MEDIA RELEASE                                                                FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Premium Central Otago wine brand and vineyard, Archangel, has been sold to the Australian Family owned Joval Wine Group.

The New Zealand Overseas Investment Office (OIO) approved the sale last week.

The purchase includes the Archangel brand, 19.6 hectares of land including 10.8 of BioGro Certified Organic vineyard planted in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Riesling.

Ian and Mary Zurakowski, founders of Archangel, bought the property in 2001 and built it into a premium award-winning brand with success across all varietals. In 2017, with the addition of a wine lounge and cellar door at the vineyard, Archangel quickly gained national recognition and made it one of Central Otago’s leading wine destinations.

The Zurakowskis are excited about the future for the unique site, “We think that the Joval Wine Group will be inspired by the landscape in which the vineyard sits with its breathtaking Central Otago views, distinctive sense of place & the special grapes it produces.”

Established in 1963, Joval Wine Group is privately owned by the Valmorbida family and has a rich history in the Australian & New Zealand wine industry.

Joval Wine Group also own the renowned Catalina Sound winery & vineyard. This acquisition will provide a new home for their successful Central Otago range, Nanny Goat Vineyard.

“We are committed to the exciting journey we are on with Nanny Goat Vineyard to create world class pinot noir. Central Otago is one of the great wine regions of the world and we are proud to be a part of it.” says John Valmorbida.

Now in its 15th vintage, Nanny Goat Vineyard has established a strong following in Australia and New Zealand and is represented in over 12 international markets.

Winemaker Alan Peters-Oswald says, “I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to work with such a highly regarded organic vineyard site, known for producing powerful yet elegant wines. The acquisition of the Archangel vineyard will provide Nanny Goat with the perfect location to further build on our successes as well as engage on a much deeper level with the local region.”

To further expand the potential of the site, Joval Wine Group will continue more vineyard plantings across the property and will be extending the existing buildings to create a new barrel hall, adding to what is already a special place in the region of Queensberry.
