Saorsa Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2016 $30

The name Saorsa is a Scottish Gaelic word that not only means but also represents a radical sense of freedom, liberty and salvation according to owner Alex Hendry.  Crafting just viognier and syrah, his 2016 vintage of syrah is very soft, very earthy, very smooth and lightly structured.  Savoury layers and hints of dried herbs lead to a funky, smoky finish.  It’s not a ‘big’ syrah and has a barnyardy character on the finish, some brettanomyces complexity perhaps.  The fruit was hand-picked, gravity run (so no pumping), no additives save for some sulphur, no fining, filtration or gas cover – so it’s wine made using oxidative processes to create a unique style.  If you’re someone who likes to veer away from the syrah norm of an occasion, then this could be for you.
